CAMP VERDE – The sixth grade math team from Camp Verde Middle School placed second among 25 teams in the annual Yavapai County Math Challenge on May 3.

The day included team and individual competitions among 125 students. CVMS entered two teams. The team of Steven Petty, Doug Harms, Logan Pratt, Dilyn Kovacovich and Brandon Ruiz took second in the team problem-solving challenge. The team of Miranda Sharp, Bubba Johnson, Eliana Paniagua, Chandon Parker and Hayley Garrison took fourth place.

In the overall finals, combining events and points for the top three schools, the CVMS A Team received second place and a trophy.

“We did geometry and problem solving, and there was business planning, and data analysis,” Dilyn said.

“And we had pizza,” Doug added.

They were also asked to build a tower out of straws, popsicles and paper, the students explained.

Individually, Dilyn and Brandon earned first-place medals in Estimation, and Logan Pratt took fifth place in Probability.

According to teacher Eric C. Hansen, CVMS was the only school from the Verde Valley to place, finishing behind only Mile High Middle School from Prescott.
